Highland Capital Co Founder James Dondero Talks Philosophy

Recently, the co founder of Dallas based investment firm Highland Capital talked about his investment philosophy. James Dondero has revealed his approach to making investment deals for his firm and its clients. Since his firm is one that specializes in debt based securities, he often spends a lot of time going over the potential of each type of deal. On a regular basis, Dondero looks over the debt based securities of interest and learns more about their profit potential. Along with evaluating a number of debt based securities deals, James also looks for deals that have the potential to turn around. Dondero is always seeking financial securities deals where a particular security as at a low value and then invests in it once it is determined that it will likely go up in value over time. As part of his investment philosophy, Dondero also looks to stay up to date on the latest trends in the financial securities industry.

 

James Dondero co founded Highland Capital Management in the year 1990. His firm was originally one that specialized in providing life insurance for consumers. During the first three years of the firm’s existence, Dondero was able to build it into one of the top firms in the industry. However, James looked to expand the firm so that it would be able to meet the needs of a number of different types of clients. As a result, Dondero made Highland Capital Management into an investment firm which provided a number of financial services to its growing client base. During the rest of the 1990’s decade, Highland Capital Management expanded in terms of services provided as well as to other areas of the world under the leadership of Dondero.

 

When James first started his career, he worked for a number of financial services firms. His first job was one where he worked as a credit analyst evaluating a number of credit based financial securities. Over the course of his career, Dondero would advance to higher positions which helped add to his experience. The last job he had was one as the chief investment officer. While holding this position, James would manage billions of dollars in assets for major corporations. He graduated with degrees in both accounting and finance from the University of Virginia, In his spare time, James donates to a number of charitable causes such as veteran’s affairs, public policy, healthcare, education and victims of family violence.

Scott Rocklage Draws On His 30 Years Of Experience For Life Sciences Venture Capital Firm

5AM Ventures’ Managing Partner Scott Rocklage joined the founders of the venture capital firm in 2003 as an early stage investment partner. His prior leadership experience at Cubist Pharmaceuticals and at Nycomed Salutar, which led to three U.S. NDAs approvals, makes Rocklage the ideal addition to the VC firm, which specializes in shaping early stage life science companies. In his current position as managing partner in 5AM Ventures’ Boston, MA office, Rocklage, along with Managing Partners Kush Parmar and Andrew Schwab, is part of the 5AM Ventures V $285 million investment fund that will focus on early stage companies developing drug delivery systems and research instruments.

 

Rocklage serves as board chair for Achaogen, Relypsa and Semprus, which are companies in 5AM’s portfolio. 5AM Ventures’ partners frequently serve as board members to support new companies. With his more than 30 years of healthcare management experience, Rocklage’s support will add significant value to each board. Rocklage also sits on the boards of Variation, Pulmatrix and WaveRx and he serves on the Board of Associates at the Whitehead Institute, a non-profit biomedical research institution.

 

Dr. Scott Rocklage earned B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and MIT respectively. While at MIT, Rocklage was accepted into Richard R. Schrock’s research group. In 2016, Rocklage and his wife Patty were honored for a major gift used to renovate lab space at MIT. Rocklage credited his time at MIT for providing the foundation for his career. During his distinguished career, Rocklage authored or co-authored over 100 research papers for peer-reviewed publications.
